With New Year's on approach the playoff hopes for the Vancouver Canucks are fading.
Looking at the NHL website, the Canucks sit forth in the very weak Pacific Division. Across the league, (specifically looking at points) Vancouver is in 22nd spot and is only six points back of the basement.
But let's not look at this as a bad thing but rather a good thing. If the Canucks fully embrace a tank, they could do something that they have only done a handful of times,
PICK IN THE TOP FIVE!
You need to jump back to the 1999 Draft where the Canucks stole their two best players of all time in the second and third spots.
One year earlier Vancouver picked up Bryan Allen forth overall. This a guy whose only major highlights while playing in Vancouver are a series of fights.
In 1990, the Draft is not looked at as the time they scooped up Petr Nedved at number two, but rather the draft that they missed out on basically everybody else. Including: Keith Primeau, Mike Ricci, Jaromir Jagr, Darryl Sydor, Darien Hatcher, Martin Brodeur, Keith Tkachuk, and Drake Berehowsky although he would go on to play for them years later.
Heading to 1988, the Canucks grabbed a franchise player who currently sits as their President of Hockey Operations.
Other "notable" picks: 1985: Jim Sandlak Number 4. 1979: Rick Vaive: Number 5. 1978: Bill Derlago: Number 4. 1977: Jere Gillis: Number 4. 1973: Dennis Ververgaert: Number 3. 1972: Don Lever: Number 3. 1971: Jocelyn Guevremont: Number 3. 1970: Dale Tallon: Number 2.
Here is a quick breakdown by the numbers:
13 draft picks in the top five: Number 5's:1 Number 4's:4 Number 3's:4 Number 2's:4 Number 1's:0
The 2016 Draft is not the deepest one in recent years but the top ten prospects speak for themselves: Julien Gauthier, RW, Val D'Or Foreurs(QMJHL), Mikhail Sergachev, D, Windsor Spitfires(OHL), Alexander Nylander, RW, Mississauga Steelheads(OHL), Alex DeBrincat, RW, Erie Otters(OHL), Tyler Benson, LW, Vancouver Giants(WHL), Patrik Laine, W, Tappara(Sm-Liiga), Jesse Puljujarvi, RW, Karpat(Sm-Liiga), Jakob Chychrun, D, Sarnia Sting(OHL), Matthew Tkachuk, LW, ondon Knights (OHL),
and the Holy Grail of the draft: Auston Matthews, C, Zurich Lions(Swiss-A).
It is time the Canucks make history and do something they haven't done before: get the first overall pick.
